Slay the Spire – Review

What is Slay the Spire about?

Slay The Spire is a super fun game, that does an amazing job at putting together card games with roguelike elements. And yes, nowadays roguelike has become an extremely popular genre and Slay The Spire was able to do put together something great. You get to build your deck, and you get to expand it while climbing the tower, so while doing that you will come across amazing cards that will combo with what you already have, making it even easier for you to defeat your enemies. There are hundreds of cards for you to use, and each time you venture into the spire, the layouts will be different, and you can always choose to take the safe path, or the riskier one.

How to play Slay the Spire?

Slay The Spire is a pretty straightforward game, before starting the game you have a total of four classes to choose from, but right at the start, only the Ironclad will be available for you. As you play more of the game, you will be able to unlock the three remaining classes. And each class has its own unique sets, gold, health, starting relic which gives you a unique ability, and an initial deck. While exploring the spire, you will come across all types of enemies, and you might even come across elite enemies, that when defeated will give you a better reward.

The combat system in Slay The Spire is pretty simple, you and the enemy will each have their turn to attack, and you have a set number of moves you can perform before ending your turn. And each card will have its own energy cost, so when engaging in combat it is important to choose carefully what you’re going to do since you only have three energy in total. And while cards that have higher costs can be better, it is also important to protect yourself by using cards that defend you, and even cards that will buff you. So one thing that will help you choose what cards to use, is the fact that you can see what you’re opponents are going to do, so this will help you choose if you can attack, buff yourself, or focus on defending so that you can block an attack. And after defeating the enemy, you will receive some gold and choose between three random cards to add to your deck, and if you’re lucky, you might get a relic, an item that will permanently buff your character during the run, it can either increase your max health, reduce the energy costs from cards, increase your energy, among many other great buffs, so relics are super important, and can help you a lot during a run.

However, if you end up dying, you will lose everything and will have to begin another run right back at the start of the spire. But dying won’t simply take everything from you, as either losing or completing a run will give you points that will not only help you unlock new characters but will also unlock new relics and cards for the character you were playing with. So even if you lose a lot when starting the game, don’t worry, keep on playing, and before focusing on only one character, make sure to try out the other three classes as soon as you unlock them.

Slay The Spire will force you to make decisions on the fly, as you don’t have much control over what type of cards you’re going to get. So you will need to make your build as you go, and hope that you get some good cards that work together with what you currently have on your deck. And when you finally manage to end a run with your character, not only can you then start to try and complete the spire with the other classes, but you will also unlock something called ascension for that character. Ascension is a game mode that adds some modifiers to the run, that will make it more challenging. There are 20 ascension levels in total and each one of them carries over the modifiers from the last level. This is perfect for players who enjoy an even bigger challenge, and it is perfect if you want to test how good you are.

My Conclusion

I love these types of games and Slay The Spire was a super fun game to try. While I wasn’t able to beat it on my first run, I did manage to complete a run within a couple of hours. Other modes can be played, and there are also some pretty challenging achievements, so if you’re a completionist, you will have a lot of fun, but might also get a bit frustrated sometimes. Other than the ascension mode, there is also a daily challenge, that gives players one chance to try and climb as high as they can in the spire, and every player will play that challenge under the same conditions.

I can’t wait to play more Slay The Spire, and see just how hard the ascensions get. These types of games are something I enjoy, and this game is really fun, and also challenging. So stay tuned over at Youtube to check for the next episodes 🙂
