Ring of Pain – Review

What is Ring of Pain about?

Ring of Pain is a dungeon crawler with some roguelike elements, where you get to explore dungeons that are all generated randomly. You can choose how to take on these fights, you can face your enemies head-on, try to be sneaky, or focus on scavenging. It is also important to choose every step carefully, as one wrong choice can put you in a complicated spot. In this game, creatures you come across will show what actions they are going to take, so will you choose to fight, or run away? It is up to you to decide how to take each dungeon.

How to play Ring of Pain?

The overall mechanics are pretty simple, and you don’t have to be amazing at games, and have incredible reflexes to be able to be good at it. Right at the start, you will be faced with a couple of decisions to make, two cards will be shown to you, they can either be monsters for you to fight against, items or portals. You can either choose to fight those monster, or to try and sneak past it. Defeating creatures will reward you with their souls, and these souls can be used to help you get upgrades. So souls are the currency in this game. You will also come across mimics, that will offer you all types of items for you, giving you the chance to create and explore all different types of builds. Unlike in other games, these mimics to not attack you 😉

The game can be extremely tough at certain times, and it will show you no pity at all. Especially at the start, you might find yourself dying a lot, but don’t let that discourage you, as that is part of the fun. Another great thing about Ring of Pain is how quickly you can start another run. So while it might be frustrating at times, you will always be able to quickly start another try at the dungeon, and the more you play, the more used to the game you will get, so every run will be easier than the previous one. In Ring of Pain, you can’t just randomly choose what to do, so be sure to always think about what you need to improve and survive. You can try and move around the dungeon and try to collect all loot available to you, or face-off against every enemy so that you can earn more souls, and get more options when choosing items from the mimic. There are so many different types of builds for you to try, so don’t be afraid to mess around and find out what works for you. So if you’re stuck in the dungeon, and you’re not able to move forward, go ahead and try to pick different items from the mimic, so you can find a build that works.

To make things a bit easier, you can see what actions your opponents are going to take so that you can choose the best action for you. If you’re stealthy enough, you will be able to sneak by enemies without being spotted, but if you’re not stealthy enough, you will be spotted, and enemies will attack you. If you want to have a good run, remember to always be one step ahead of your enemies, and if you’re going to fight then, remember that you need to have enough health to be able to win against them. And while items and types of equipment are extremely important, being able to upgrade the right attributes is just as important. At a certain time, you might come across an amazing item, that can help you through the whole game.

We did go quite blind into the game, so I did have some difficulties with the game, as I had no idea what to do, and what even was the right way to play the game. But after a couple of tries, in, the end I finally managed to complete a run, and I got to say, it was a pretty fun experience. Trying to understand what items work with a certain type of equipment was pretty cool. The game has so many different things for you to explore, and you can play it as many times as you want. Another great thing about Ring of Pain is the fact that you can spend about an hour on a run, meaning that whenever you have a bit of free time, you can always manage to squeeze a run. This makes the game more unique, as you won’t feel frustrated as you spend hours on a run, only to die and lose everything. This is what makes it different from other games, so after losing a run, instead of getting angry, I at least felt even more motivated to continue playing, as each time I could see that I was slowly getting the hang of the game.

My Conclusion

I’m a huge fan of these types of games, and to be honest, I enjoyed playing Ring of Pain. It has so many cool mechanics, and the fact that each run can be super quick makes it even better. While it took me some time to get u used to the game, after a couple of hours, I was even able to finish the game once after a couple of tries, and messing around with different builds. And I had a great time playing the game, and to be honest, I can’t wait to keep playing the game, try some different builds, and also get to discover all types of cards.
