RimWorld – Review

What is RimWorld about?

After having their space liner crash into a planet, they must now build a new colony to survive! Right at the start, four different modes can be chosen, but for this run, we will choose the classic/story mode. In it, we have more resources available to us, and we start with three people on our crew.

In this colony, we will have to manage our crew, as they can get sick and hurt, as we will have to fight off against pirates, animals, hostile tribes, among other enemies. As our colonies grows, we can also take in refugees and add them to our crew.

We will choose one of the three available AI storytellers, and this choice will affect how the game will play. Cassandra classic offers a more fair experience, and the longer we play, the harder it will get. Phoebe Chillax gives players a lot of time in between events. And lastly, we have Randy Random who generates completely random events.

How to play RimWorld?

After choosing our preferred difficulty, and choosing Randy Random as our AI Storyteller, we are now ready to start our adventure. And although people don’t like it, we choose pyromaniac as our trait!

We are now presented with the world and must choose a spot for us to start our colony. There are different types of Biomes that we can choose, and for this Playthrough, we are going to the boreal forest. After choosing a nice spot filled with nice resources, and in a place where we are not surrounded by enemies, we proceed to customize our characters.

To give us a bit of a challenge, all of our three initial characters have the pyromaniac trait, which makes them really love to set things on fire. But it will not stop there, every other villager that tries to join our colony will also have to be Pyromaniacs , if they’re not, we will imprison and sell them!

We are now in the world, and ready to start building our colony. Our first step is to take a look at our surroundings, to see where we will start our colony for now. We are surrounded by mountains, so that will help protect our colonists to survive, and there is also rich soil near us.

Our first task is to set tasks for our characters, and as much as it is important to set some recreation time, we will focus on making them work more, as we need to gather a lot of resources right at the start. After gathering enough resources, we build a small shelter on the side of the mountain, so that our food doesn’t go bad, and as soon as we do it, one of our characters decides to start a fire, and not a controlled one!

After losing almost all of our food, we now decided to build a stone room to avoid another fire. We gather enough resources to build a stonecutting table and prioritize gathering resources. But our little accident also caused Gordon, one of our characters to get badly hurt, so we made some beds, and assigned Cassie to give Gordon some first-aid.

But sadly, our first run ends in disaster. With Gordon badly burn, and our other two characters freezing, everyone, well, everyone except Ratten the cat, will not survive. And that is how our first run ends.

We reset our run and make a fresh save in case we run into problems again. We now know what to avoid, and our first step is to build a stone house, so none of our Pyromaniacs go on a spree again. So right off the bat, we will create a stonecutting table, and focus on harvesting stone. We are able to protect our food, and make a shelter where we build beds so that our colonists can rest.

We started by making them work all day with no rest, and our objective is to remove anything that can be burned away from our food and medicine. Our main focus is still gathering resources, and we will now move ahead to create more storage rooms, just in case one of our Pyromaniacs decides to have some fun near our food and medicine. We also built a fire inside our room, to keep our characters from freezing.

As our food begins to run out, we must send someone out to hunt for us. Gordon and Sugar are busy, so our only choice is Cassie. She is not so good at hunting, but she will do the job. To be able to prepare meals we also built a butchering station to start producing food for our colonists.

My Conclusion

I love playing RimWorld, and the challenge that we set ourselves by having only Pyromaniacs will for sure end up giving us some unexpected challenges. We will continue with this run and I can’t wait to play more with you guys.

If you like games of this genre, you will absolutely love RimWorld. The game can prove to be a bit challenging, but the game has an in-game teaching system that watches your actions, and helps you with notifications, and shows you how to do it.
