Factorio – Review
What is Factorio about?
After our ship crashes on a planet during free play, we must gather the resources around us to launch a rocket into space and ask for help. While our main focus is building and mining, we must also prepare ourselves to fight against the natives who occupy the planet we’re on.
At first glance, the game can be a little overwhelming for beginners. If you are not a gaming machine, an adaptation phase, and the slight learning curve will be natural at the start. We are revisiting the game after almost two years, and we will embark on our journey to relearn the game.
There are so many things to do:
- Automate Everything
- Build a Train Network
- Build a Flying Bot Network
- Push back the Biters
- Expand your base and finally launch a rocket into space
How to play Factorio?
Being thrown into this unknown, and mysterious planet can be daunting – and particularly scary at the start. With limited equipment and resources, we will have to rely on our wits, resource management, and building abilities to ensure our survival.
Right off the bat, we must familiarize ourselves with our surroundings, and explore them to identify what type of resources are available, and useful to us. After our primary analysis and exploration round, we should gather and craft different types of machinery that will improve our progression by helping us gather resources faster.
As our technology improves, and we start expanding the types of machinery we can create, the monsters that inhabit the planet we are in will start to attack, and with time they evolve and become more aggressive.
There are plenty of types of resources for us to collect at the beginning, and we have limited things that can be crafted. Gathering resources by hand is a slow process that usually takes a lot of time, thankfully the solution is to improve our technology so we can gather those resources automatically – and faster.
As the game progresses, your machines will be attacked by the planet natives, and at the beginning, you will have to defend your machines by yourself. But as you develop your tech, you can strategically build and place defensive weaponry such as turrets, tanks, and other types of weapons.
Our first step is to gather as many mineral resources as possible so that we can build more advanced kinds of machinery. We also landed in a spot that is rich in minerals, and there is also a water source nearby. We have a nice spot to gather enough resources so that we can escape this planet later on.
At the start of our playthrough, we will be focusing mainly on base-building, and going through the first steps of starting production. As soon as we venture into this world, we are confronted with some hardships, such as having our production equipment attacked by bitters.
We lost some of our equipment, but we were able to fend them off. The good news is that we were able to set up a nice production line, and even started advancing our technology, making it possible for us to start automating more and more things.
As we start to gather more resources, and automate more and more, we start a nice line of production with various types of resources. We are also able to start creating, and setting up defensive mechanisms, to help us stop the aliens from destroying our progress
At the end of our first episode, we were able to automate the production of a lot of our resources. By using different kinds of belts, we started a chain of production, making it easier for us to gather and deliver resources.
We also started focusing on automating the creation of ammunition and defense turrets so we can defend our machinery from attacks. Our next step is focusing on upgrading the “green science”, the logistic science, so that more things can be automated.
Although it has been some time since I played Factorio, it didn’t take long to remember how to play it. For newcomers, the game might seem complicated at first, but if you need any help or advice, you can join me while I stream, leave a comment on this video, and even post a comment down below.
We still have a long journey ahead of us, as we improve our technology to be able to leave this planet. While we did manage to start automating a lot of production, there’s still a lot more that we need to do.
My Conclusion
While we are still not done with this run of the game, Factorio is an amazing game, and it is an amazing game to play, and you can play it for hours and not even notice it. Prior to streaming i already have over 400h into it. Its learning curve is a bit steep, but I will try to help you understand the game the best I can.
It is not an extremely expensive game, and if you’re not sure if it is the right one for you, there is a demo available that can be downloaded for free!
